Every had this proble ? “The item can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume’s format”

Imagine my surprise when I tried to copy over a 4.5 GB file to a newly opened USB drive and got this beauty of an error:
“The item can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume’s format”

And it did not make sense, it was a 32GB hard drive with nothing on it. On further investigation and trollingĀ on the internet it appears that you cant copy a very large file to a FAT 32 USB disk. Why ? Who knows…

The solution however is:

  1. Back up any relevant data on your USB Drive
  2. Go to Disc Utility on your mac
  3. Click on the drive
  4. And then click Erase up the top
  5. Now rename the USB Drive
  6. Select Format to be ExFat (Nothing else)
  7. And click Erase.

And now finally you should be able to use the USB to copy larger files, and it will work on both PC and Macs to transfer data
